Why airports use it

Better Drivers, Without the Cost of Live Training

  • Safer Training

Practise emergency procedures and runway incursion prevention without endangering staff or aircraft.

  • More Practice, Lower Cost

Every driver gets dedicated practice time, which apron drivers rarely get on the live airside, with no vehicles, runway time or slot capacity taken from live operations.

  • Faster Onboarding

Instructors follow several trainees at once from a Supervisor Station, and trainees can practise unsupervised, with results recorded in your LMS.

Who it trains

Two Kinds of Airside Driver, Two Ways to Train

Apron

Apron Drivers

The largest group: ramp staff from ground handlers and others working on the apron. Train them in numbers with scripted scenarios focused on safe distances around aircraft and giving way to traffic. Drivers practise driving in poor visibility and responding to unexpected hazards, with instructors reviewing their decisions. Repeatable sessions build confidence and consistent driving habits before they head onto the apron.

Manoeuvring area

Taxiway and Runway Drivers

Mostly airport staff, with more safety-critical work and radio phraseology to learn, so training is one to one. They practise stopping at lit stop bars and making their radio calls to ATC on the ground and tower frequencies, with a supervisor checking each call goes out on the right one. Taxiway and runway time is hard to get; on the simulator it is always available.

Case study

Inside Sydney Airport's 7-workstation Driving Centre

Sydney Airport built a dedicated driving centre around 7 Aveo simulator workstations, integrating simulation into its standard airside driver training programme.

559

drivers completed their training in the simulator

4.1%

received an aircraft-related infringement within 3 months, with simulator training

25.3%

received an aircraft-related infringement within 3 months, without simulator training

Key features

What Sets It Apart from Traditional Training

01

Realistic Airport Environment

Immerse yourself in a high-fidelity digital twin of the airport, complete with accurate signage, lighting and infrastructure. Pre-programmed missions inspired by real airside incidents let drivers practise your hotspots, reducing the chance of human error.

Integrations

Connects to Your Learning Management System

The simulator can integrate with any LMS on the market. Exam results and competency profiles are recorded automatically, reducing manual data entry and duplication.

Partnership with AIRDAT

We've partnered with AIRDAT, integrating their PASSPORT Training system with the Aveo Driving Simulator. Getting access to live runways for airside driver training is a major challenge for busy airports. The integration improves the learning experience and brings efficiencies and cost savings for your airport.

What customers say

In Their Words

"The airside driving simulator not only allows us to deliver an enhanced, highly engaging initial training course but also enables us to recreate specific incidents or near misses based on reports received through our SMS reporting platform. Our fire team are already using the simulator for Low Visibility Procedures (LVP’s) airfield search training and we’re really looking forward to introducing winter operation simulations for the airside operations team."

Richard DuncanRichard DuncanHead of Airfield Operations, Leeds Bradford Airport

"The Aveo Airside Driving Simulator has revolutionised our training approach, significantly enhancing safety. It offers students hands-on experience in a risk-free environment, allowing them to master complex procedures confidently."

Why now

Regulators Are Already Pointing at Simulation

No regulation names a particular simulator. What they all require is proof that drivers can handle an emergency, in bad weather, without endangering aircraft, and simulation is becoming the only credible way to show it.
